Taxpayer Information

Welcome to AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the free tax preparation program provided by AARP Foundation volunteers.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation program in the United States. We offer in-person tax preparation help for both federal and Delaware state taxes. Our services are free of charge, focusing on taxpayers who are 50 or older with low to middle income or to those who cannot afford paid tax preparation.

Tax-Aide has several options for providing taxpayer assistance. These options vary by location and are subject to change.

  • In-Person: In Tax-Aide’s traditional in-person service, taxes are prepared and filed by IRS-certified tax counselors
  • Facilitated Self Assistance (FSA): You prepare your own return using our equipment with IRS-certified counselor support
  • Low-Contact: Taxpayers interact with IRS-certified Tax-Aide volunteers in one or two short, in-person meetings to exchange documents

Tax-Aide volunteers may be unable to prepare returns in certain situations, including returns with:

  • Rental income (except for land-only rentals or rentals of apersonal residence less than 15 days)
  • Hobby income
  • Self-employment if there are employees, losses, depreciation, expenses exceeding $35,000, or business use of the home
  • Digital assets (including digital currency such as Bitcoin), if the taxpayer (a) received digital assets as a reward, award or payment for property or services; of (b) sold, exchanged, or otherwise disposed of digital assets
  • Complicated capital gains/losses, such as futures or options.
